This is something I keep returning to. We don’t help orphanages in Nepal because it is so difficult to distinguish the genuine from the fake. Too often the children are dressed in rags and underfed to arouse the sympathies of well-meaning but naive tourists. Several years ago we did send a volunteer to one such orphanage, and he revealed to us what was happening behind the warm welcome we were given by the management: beatings, lack of care, and the selling of children to foreign adoption agencies.
Last summer, I spent eight weeks in the Indian region of Ladakh. Even with large amounts of preparation, training and research, I found myself in a state of constant amazement and surprise. Immersed in a culture established eons before my own country was ever imagined or conceived, the experience touched me greatly and will follow throughout my lifetime.
I travelled from the United States to the heart of the Indian Himalaya to teach English and math in a remote village school where teachers and students welcomed me with open arms and beautiful spirits.…

December 2014 – November 2015 Our work this year has been overshadowed by the disastrous earthquakes in Nepal. Although HELP is not a disaster relief agency, we felt we had to respond to this event since some of the villages we support were badly affected. INSPECTION VISIT (October – November 2015) Barbara Porter undertook this year’s inspection visit, and visited the schools we support in Nepal, Sikkim and the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. She also met many of the sponsored children. |

At least the previous Nepali Congress (NC) government had registered a proposal for a constitutional amendment in the hope of addressing some Madhesi demands. The hair-raising roads one has to negotiate in Sikkim and District Darjeeling are maintained by BRO (the Border Road Organisation) a public service that delights in fixing to the rock face uplifting advice. These notices are so numerous that I imagine they have a whole department with the sole purpose of devising and making these signs. So enthusiastic are the workers in this department they they feel it is their duty to offer not just road safety advice, but also moral advice.…

I came across an old diary today, in which I had copied a police notice stuck up on the gates of the Macfarlane Memorial Church in Kalimpong in 1995. The Church stands on a hill overlooking the town, and can be seen from miles around. The police notice was worthy of recording because it is dealing with a dispute between two Christian denominations, the Church of North India (CNI) and the United Church of North India (UNCI) over the right to use the Church that had been erected in the 19th Century in memory of the Scottish missionary, the Rev.
Nepal’s parliament passed a new national constitution on Wednesday, weeks after political leaders reached a historic agreement to create a federal state following an earthquake that killed nearly 9,000 people.
A loud cheer went up in the House as Speaker Subash Nembang announced that the long-delayed bill had been passed after violent protests that have killed more than 40 people and shut down large swathes of the south.
In all, 507 of the young republic’s 598 lawmakers came out in favour of the bill in the marathon vote, which began on Sunday and continued late into Wednesday night.…
